Description

This lovely oriental four-fold screen is of superb quality and is very heavy. It looks to date from the mid-twentieth century, but is older in style. Each panel is hand-painted with a different oriental landscape scene with raised three-dimensional effects. Beneath these hand-painted scenes are smaller panels with raised carved foliage scenes. The frame is carved around the edges, with lovely carvings of a bird, possible a fire-bird to the top of each panel. There are no signatures or makers marks that we can see. The panels are have more basic painted backs.

Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear and damage consistent with age and use. There are some significant losses in places - to the raised areas on the painted panels and to the raised carvings on the bottom panels. There is some scuffing and wear, including to the painted panels and the painted panels have some marks and stains. There is some knocking and wear around the edges and some areas of minor wood loss and cracking. One of the inner panels shows some signs of re-gluing to the top carved area and has some wood loss and tape residue.

Each Panel - 192cm high, 65.5cm wide (outer), 62cm wide (inner), 3.5cm deep (to maximums).
