This attractive balance scale is contained within its original glazed wooden case with sliding front panel. Both the case and the scales are marked with the maker W & J. George Ltd. & F. E. Becker & Co. The reader at the base of the scale gives the number 817 and states them to be British made. The scales date from the late 1940s and they are made from brass. We believe the scales to be complete, but we have not finely tested them so do not know if they are in exact working order. There are no weights present. The glazed case is supported on small metal feet.

Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in good display condition with some wear consistent with age and use. We have not finely tested them so do not know if they are in exact working order. There are no weights present. The scales have some discolouration and some slight surface corrosion in places. The case has some scuffing and wear to the woodwork which is heavy in places, and there is some splitting to the sides at the front. The case is a little faded. The scales and case are overall a little grubby and would benefit from a careful clean and polish.
