Description

This unusual piece of mourning jewellery features a rotating centre set into what we believe to be a pinchbeck mount. On one side is a shell cameo depicting Hebe, the Greek goddess of youth feeding an eagle, and on the other is a glazed compartment containing a lock of hair. The surround features intertwined leaves. The piece was designed to be both a brooch and a pendant as there was originally both a hanging loop and a pin, although the pin is now missing. There are no hallmarks or maker's marks. It may be made from pinchbeck. Please note that the piece is in need of some repair - the leaves at one side are detached but present and the pin is missing. We would esimtate the piece to date from the late nineteenth century.

Condition: Overall in fair condition, and in need of some repair. The cameo has an area of damage and loss at the top to one side (by the bird's wings). The pin is broken and missing, and the leaves are one side are detached. However they are present and have been attached to the frame with a thread at some point. There is some denting and misshaping in places. The piece is a little grubby and has some tarnishing and scuffing.

The approx. measurements are as follows:
5.5cm high, 5cm wide.
