Description

This small box is a hand-made folk art piece. It is difficult to date. We would estimate it to be eighteenth century in date, although it may be earlier. We do not know its origins and it appears to have undergone some alteration over time. The box has a hinged framed sloping lid which opens to reveal an open interior with a small compartment at the back with three smalll drawers beneath. The lid of the compartment has engraved decoration. The exterior of the box has had a thin layer of gesso applied and this has been painted over. A lovely early piece.

Condition: Overall the box does have some heavy wear consistent with age and use. The gesso is chipped, worn and grubby, and the paintwork is dulled and faded with age. There is some wood loss in places and there is a wood shrinkage crack to the top. There are some signs of old restoration and repair, and the base looks to have been replaced at some point (some considerable time ago). There are some signs of old woodworm - this is not active but has been retreated as a precaution. The original lock is present, but there is no key.

The approx. measurements are as follows:
19cm high, 27.5cm wide, 20cm deep (to maximums).
