Description

This lovely antique French cave a liqueur dates from the second half of the nineteenth century. It has lovely wooden inlays, which include burr walnut, feathered satinwood, ebony and rosewood, over a wooden carcass. There is a metal and mother of pearl inlaid panel on the top. The top of box lifts up and the front folds down, and the sides fold out, for display (see photographs). Inside is a lift-out carrier with wooden base and decorative metal framework. Some of the original glass contents are present - four decanters (one of which is missing its stopper) and eight small liqueur glasses (two of which are damaged). The glass is hand-blown and of lovely quality with fine etched decoration featuring flowers, butterflies and dragonflies. There is what we believe to be a retailer's sticker on the base of the carrier for L. Boutigny of 21 & 22 Palais Royal.

Condition: Overall in very good condition, although some of the contents are missing and damaged. The case has some scuffing and wear as might be expected and some shrinkage splitting and minor chipping to the veneers. The base of the case has a wood shrinkage split. There is no key present. There are some signs of restoration and repair. The wooden base of the inner carrier is slightly warped and the metal framework has some tarnishing. Some of the contents are missing. One of the decanters is missing its stopper, and two of the glasses that are present are broken. One has been reglued and one is broken and the foot is detatched although still present - however there appears to be some loss from the stem of this one and the pieces do not line up exactly.

The approx. measurements are as follows:
Case - 27cm high, 32cm wide, 24cm deep.
