Description

We are offering for sale this rather dramatic. late 19th Century, pastel and charcoal moonlit view of a Scottish ruined castle, high on a cliff. It is a rocky coast, with some lower cliffs and two sea stacks standing out from the cliffs.

The artist has exhibited a very competent handling of the play of light from the moon, which is just peeping around the edge of the cliff below the castle, and which is illuminating a path across the waves and the underneath of the few clouds in the sky.

There are a few listed artists in our reference books by the name of J. Grant, mainly Scottish, or J. Grant with a middle initial, which would tie in with the subject matter, but none of them are known for pastels. We did, however, find three others by this artist, two landscapes and one marine with the signature J. Grant, in capitals, but nobody seems to known any biographical information about him.

The pastel has been newly double mounted in two-tone acid-free mountboard to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/8 inch soft gold and black frame to suit. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
