This is an original (and rare model) of a 19th century Bas relief sculpture in solid bronze of William Ewart Gladstone (1809 – 1898). Gladstone was one of the longest serving British statesmen during the 19th century as well as being Prime Minister on four occasions, mounted on velvet covered panel and framed unglazed in a period mahogany frame. The piece is gilded, it isn't bright gold, the gilding is much more in keeping with its age. Condition is excellent, Fixed to the back plate by a single slotted screw which sockets to the underside of the plaque.

This plaque shows Gladstone as he appeared around 1860, although he became Prime minister in 1868 for the first of four terms, the image is most likely from the part of his career as a senior and important British Statesman.

Size: frame: 27cm by 20 cm, the oval image is 19cm x 16 cm. Buchanan and Laing Galleries are a private client business. Appointments can be made by arrangement via email.
