A rare late 18th. century oak Churchwardens’ box
A rare late 18th. century oak Churchwardens’ box, the hinged lid opening to reveal an interior fitted with a candle box and three separate locks.

Ca. 1780

H:11”, 28cms, W:20.5”, 52 cms, D:12.25”, 31 cms.

Note: By each of the local Vicar and two Churchwardens having different keys, this meant that all three had to be present whenever the box was opened. This would have held valuable church items, documents and of course money.

The construction and use of solid Oak make this too heavy to run off with as well.
