Antique Coventry Made Fusee Pocket Watch with Chain. %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A rare William Henry Harrison open-faced, silver fusee pocket watch of premium quality (115g), hallmarked London 1872. Sold with a 55g silver hallmarked double Albert watch chain and fob. (Total weight 170g).

During the period c1840 - 1900, the buoyant city of Coventry watchmaking community was widely regarded as not only the best in Britain, but quite probably, the best in the world and Harrison, was considered to be one of the very best watchmakers in Coventry, such is the heritage and prestige of this lovely timepiece.

Born c1839 in Foleshill (Coventry), Harrison’s father William (Sr) was a watch cap maker, so Jr., followed his father into the horological sector. To this end, it is believed that Harrison (Jr) served his apprentiship under well-establish Coventry master watchmaker Henry Westrap.

Having served his apprentiship, Harrison moved back to Foleshill, (today a suburb of Coventry), working from Church Lane, Foleshill (some 2 miles away from the heart of Coventry’s famous watch making community of the day). From here, Harrison hand-crafted superb pocket watches, whilst also managing a antique jewellery shop with his wife Alice. However, by c1870, Harrison had become more interested in the design and assembly of bicycles, making fewer and fewer pocket watches as a consequence. (His last watches were made around 1874, after which time he became a full-time bicycle manufacturer and jeweller, meaning that whilst all of Harrison’s watches are scarce his 1870’s made watches are rare and highly collectible). Harrison passed away in 1905 and had risen to become not only a very well-respected, popular citizen and wealthy landowner of Coventry, but also a much sought after, high-end, maker of pocket watches and bicycles and is fondly documented as being “...quite the eccentric gentlemen.”

The watch has a Harrison signed fusee movement, with an engraved 'Coventry Star Mark’ (the endorsement of excellence). It has a silver balance and ruby end stone, with a white enamelled face and subsidiary seconds hand dial with its original blued hands.

The watch comes in an executive PU leather storage / display case with a winding key, together with instructions on how to wind and set the watch time.

Note: Silver chains and fobs are interchangeable.
