Art Nouveau Silver Sugar Tongs, W. Devenport, 1909
Here we have a stylish pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the Art Nouveau Lily pattern. The sinuous design runs up each arm of the tongs, whilst the hinge is blank with no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sugar tongs are made in Birmingham by noted silversmith William Devenport and date to 1909. William Devenport founded his firm in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter around 1890. They were very successful, producing a wide range of household and personal silverware up until around 1950.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sugar tongs are 10.6cm / 4.2ins long and weigh a respectable 23.1g / 0.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the hinge, are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter k for 1909 and the W.D makers' mark for William Devenport.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
