Early 20th C. Brass Matchbox Holder & Tray, KINCO
This is an attractive Early 20th Century Decorated Brass Matchbox Holder and Tray. The upright matchbox holder stands at one end with the oblong tray stretching out in front of it. Both pieces are decorated with an engraved Persian carpet pattern, which has been coloured red at the top of the matchbox holder.
The holder and tray were made in Kingston-upon-Thames in Surrey as part of the KINCO range and date to the 1920s/30s. KINCO was the trademark of the firm British Metal (Kingston) Ltd, who were based in Kingston-upon-Thames in Surrey and later also in St Margarets near Twickenham. Between 1923 and 1939 they produced a wide range of distinctive decorated brass ware of very high quality drawing inspiration from Egyptian, Persian, Indian and Chinese designs, which were hand coloured and then lacquered. In 1939 the firm converted completely to war work and never returned to decorative brass items.
Condition is good with no dings or dents. It's possible that there was more colour on the holder and tray which has worn away by many years of cleaning but not all KINCO products were fully coloured so it may have always been plain brass. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The matchbox holder and tray are 12.6cm / 4.96ins long and 8.8cm / 3.46ins across. It stands 6.9cm / 2.7ins high. It will hold a matchbox measuring 5.7cm / 2.2ins by 3.7cm / 1.4ins x 1.8cm / 0.71ins. It weighs in at 176.6g / 6.23oz.
The tray is stamped KINCO Made In England on the underside.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
