Edwardian Silver Sugar Tongs, J. Sherwood, 1902
Here we have a charming small pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the classic Old English pattern. The tongs have no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sugar tongs are made in Birmingham by J. Sherwood & Sons and date to 1902. The firm was in business at the Regent Works in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter between around 1858 and the start of the First World War, primarily making flatware and tableware.
Condition is good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you have to expect after nearly 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tongs are a small size pair and may have originated with a set of teaspoons from which they have become separated over the course of time. They are 7.5cm / 2.9ins long and weigh a respectable 10.8g / 0.38oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of one arm, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the J.S & S makers' mark for J. Sherwood & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
