Exquisite Chinese carved figure of a peasant in full stride, holding a tall bamboo cane in one hand while the other clutches at the woven bag containing fruit or vegetables which hangs from his neck. A small boy grabs at his cane with a short-legged animal at the boy's side. This is the work of a master carver. The attention to detail in the depiction of the woven bag and rope handle, the folds in the man's tunic and the woven sandals is astounding.
The composition is made from a single piece of boxwood. The figures stand on an ebonised plinth which has been carved to resemble slate.
