George V Silver Egg Cup, John Round, 1927
This is a good quality George V Sterling Silver Egg Cup. The egg cup is in goblet form with a stepped round base, a knopped stem and a scroll rim around the top of the cup. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The egg cup is made in Sheffield by silversmiths John Round & Son Ltd and dates to 1927. The firm was founded by John Round in 1847, operating from a small workshop attached to his house, and he was later joined by his son Edwin. The Round family was bought out in 1874 but the name of the firm was retained. The company was finally taken over by Joseph Rodgers & Sons in the 1930s but the name was still used into the 1960s.
Condition is very good with just one truly tiny ding in the rim plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The egg cup is 4.7cm / 1.8ins in diameter across the top rim and stands 7.1cm / 2.8ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 59.0g / 2.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the side of the body, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter k for 1927 and the J R in an oval makers' mark for John Round & Son Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the egg cup.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
