John Ogilby London to St David's Road Map 1720s

A beautiful, large format, framed, original John Ogilby hand coloured road map engraving showing the desirable first part of the John Ogilby London to St David’s map, dated c.1720s. This is map, plate number 14 of the 100 maps in his original Britannia Atlas of 1675 (first edition). It shows a street plan of London then the road from the Standard in Cornhill to Brentford, Hounslow, Colbrook, Maidenhead, Dorchester (on Thames) and Abingdon. This original hand coloured engraving has a central fold as issued and we are advised it is dated c.1720s.
This map is not a continuation. There are separate sections from Abingdon to Monmouth, Monmouth to Burton Ferry and from Burton Ferry to St David's.
The Britannia Atlas was a landmark in accurate road description and was the first national road atlas of any country in Western Europe. The format Ogilby chose is highly original, a system of scrolled parchment taking the reader from one destination, often London’s outskirts, to a designated town looking only straight ahead. Each strip has an accompanying compass rose to register changes of orientation. It shows 1 inch to every mile – a system subsequently also used by Ordnance Survey.
The Atlas was dedicated to King Charles II, who in the previous year had made Ogilby ‘His Majesty’s Cosmographer and Geographick Printer’ with a salary of £13.6s.8d per annum.
This map is especially interesting because it was chosen and framed by Baynton-Williams then of 18 Lowndes Street London SW1. Baynton-Williams were in Lowndes Street in the 1970s and 1980s so it was clearly framed then. An article in the New York Times in 1983 specifically picked out Baynton- Williams as having good collections of antique maps.
Roger Baynton-Williams did much to popularise map collecting and wrote books on the subject including the 1969 book Investing in Maps.
This is a fine original road map engraving for map collectors by John Ogilby dated c.1720s and framed by London Map Specialist Roger Baynton-Williams.

Condition
This framed original road map engraving is in good antique condition. The map has lightly visible crease marks. The cardboard surround has some marks and there are some water marks on the left hand edge of the road map. The are some small marks / scratches on the frame. The backing board of the frame has pulled away from the frame on the left hand side. The frame and backing needs to have new tape to hold it together or the map needs to be re-framed.
