19th C Silver Caddy Spoon, Hanau Import, Lon. 1896
This is an attractive late 19th century Sterling Silver Caddy Spoon from Hanau in Germany with London import marks. The spoon has an image in the bowl of a fishwife bringing home the day's catch with a figure of the fisherman in the distance. This is within a beaded frame below a crimped edge. The stem of the spoon features two fish or possibly dolphins with some reeds growing between them and a finial of a fishing boat in full sail.
The German makers' mark is somewhat rubbed away but is probably one of those used by the Dingeldein Brothers of Hanau, Germany, one of the most notable Hanau makers founded in 1868. The import marks are for Berthold Muller & Son, a firm that specialised in importing German silver, particularly from Hanau, for their showroom in London's Wardour Street in the late 19th and early 20th century.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the most minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The caddy spoon is 12cm / 4.7ins long and weighs a very respectable 39.0g / 1.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The Hanau pseudo marks on the heel of the spoon are quite rubbed but show the crowned lion and probably the curled tail of a fish, both marks used by the Dingeldein Brothers. The English import marks are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the letter F for Foreign, showing that it is an imported piece, the date letter a for 1896 and the BM sponsors' mark for Berthold Muller & Son.
