C 1810 Rev Isaac Watts’s Verse Transfer Childs Cup
This decorative little black transferware child’s mug was produced in Staffordshire in England, circa 1810. The extract from the hymn reads "For I have food while others starve. Or beg from door to door" is taken from Rev Isaac Watts’s song “Whene’er I take my walks abroad”, published in 1715. This type of moral virtued mug was presented to good children at Sunday school during the early 19th century. The actual extract is from a hymn by Isaac Watts and was included in his book “Divine and Moral Songs for Children”. Isaac Watts (b 17th July 1674 – d 25th November 1748) was an English Christian Minister, hymn writer, theologian and logician. After thoroughly checking in Noel Riley's The History of Children's China 1790-1890, we have not found another example like this.
